It’s that time of the year again! I know Valentine’s day may not be as big of a holiday as Christmas or Halloween, but it’s still fun to celebrate! I remember Valentine’s day being one of my favorite holidays to celebrate in elementary school. It was so much fun to decorate a box and go around the classroom putting Valentine cards and candy into my classmates boxes. Sure it wasn’t sustainable but it was a fun experience! Now that I’m older and wiser, I still celebrate Valentine’s day but I do it in a much more sustainable fashion. So if you’re looking for some options for a sustainable Valentine’s day, keep scrolling to find out my favorites gifts and treats!
Lingerie
There’s something super empowering about lingerie. It’s not just your run of the mill everyday bra and panty but rather pieces that make you feel sexy and bad-ass! Whether you’re looking to purchase a set that to share during a moment of intimacy with your loved one, or even as a gift to yourself or someone else, check out Clare Bare! Clare Bare has so many cute styles to choose from! All of the pieces are handmade and made from recycled materials. You can even input your own measurements and have lingerie custom-made specifically to your body. Want some more options? Check out my Sustainable Lingerie post here!
Jewelry
Jewelry is another great gift to give to someone on Valentine’s day especially if you’re ever unsure of what to gift them! Contrary to popular belief, I truly believe it’s an easy gift compared to other items because there is such a wide range of jewelry to choose from. Simply look at the style of the person you’re getting it for! Are they into minimalism, colored jewels, or do they like something extravagant? Once you’ve got that figured out, all that’s left to choose from is the type of jewelry! Personally, you can never go wrong with a necklace or simple ring with me! As I’ve always discussed on my channel, jewelry is controversial because of the methods used in creating them. It’s super important to always look for brands that promote ethical practices such as fair labor wages, upcycled metals, and absolutely no blood diamonds (or even actual diamonds at all). If you’re looking for a place to start your jewelry search, check out Baleen! They have a wide range of earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. Also, remember how I mentioned that shopping for jewelry is easy so long as you know the person’s style? Well they have collections based on different personal styles. Choose from minimalistic, bohemian, classic, or bold/statement jewelry! Wanting some more options? Check out my (extensive) post on Sustainable Jewelry Guide here!
Candy
What’s a holiday without some sweet treats?! Next to jewelry, you absolutely cannot go wrong with candy! There’s so many options out there to satisfy everyone. Personally, I’m a chocolate gal. I love a really good piece of chocolate that’s perfectly rich and sweet. My favorite has to be the Endorfin Foods Caramelized Coconut Bar from Thrive Market! It’s gluten, dairy, and soy free, made from organic, non-GMO ingredients, and has no preservatives. What I love most about this is that when I’ve finished the chocolate, I can compost the packaging! Flowers
Flowers are another wonderful gift to give on Valentine’s day. They’re also perfect for the individual who doesn’t want anything large but still deserves something nice! Personally, I’d recommend buying from a local florist or farmer’s market to make it as sustainable as possible. If you’re not able to do so and must resort to the supermarket, be sure to take the flowers as is and not wrapped in extra packaging. This happens pretty frequently at a local grocery store of mine where the cashiers will wrap a larger piece of plastic to cover the exposed top of the flowers, then place it in a regular shopping bag. Another great floral gift could be a live plant from a local nursery!
Candles
I’m a fiend for candles and LOVE them year round! Candles are such a great and simple gift! Plus they last longer than candy and flowers. I also like how candle packaging can be re-used! Repurpose the glass container into a brush holder, mini vase, succulent planter, or pencil holder! Here are a few different candles that I’m currently obsessed with:
Sanari Candle Organic Candle Gift Set - this is the perfect sampler of candles if you are undecided on which scent to get. Not to mention they’re still a really good size! You can also choose from three different scent collections! My favorite collections are the Fruity Floral and Citrus Herbal
P. F. Candle Co. Pinon Soy Candle - If you’re a fan of subtle wood/cabin scents this is perfect for you! What I love is that it’s subtle and sweetened with the scent of vanilla.
United by Blue Surf Soy Candle - I love a good clean, fresh scent. This is perfect year round and is a scent you cannot go wrong with because it’s super versatile.
Bath Goodies
Planning a relaxing or romantic night in this Valentine’s day? Why not treat yourself to a nice, luxurious bath or an at home spa night? Bath salts are an incredible way to elevate your run-of-the-mill bath. Check out these rose scented bath salts by Well Kept! Want a full self-care kit? Check out this spa gift set here! It comes with bath salts, face mask kit, and a candle! The full package for setting the mood!
Wine
I love a good bottle of wine! While I’m down for wine at all occasions, days like Valentine’s call for ~really~ good wine! Just like other products, it’s important to find wine that comes from sustainably sourced crops and little added synthetic ingredients. This Rose by Paga Casa Gran is a really good bottle! It’s crisp and light yet pairs perfectly with main course meals unlike other roses. It’s also the perfect balance of sweet and dry, which is great because I am not a big fan of dry wines. Looking for more options? Check out local businesses or stores that specialize in selling wine. Just remember to be on the lookout for brands that are biodynamic, organic, and/or sustainably farmed.
