Sustainable Leggings

Updated: Jan 10, 2021

Let's admit it: leggings are far superior to jeans or any other pant (other than comfy sweatpants or pajama bottoms.) You will literally always find me wearing leggings unless I absolutely have to wear actual pants. Not only are the right leggings comfortable; rather they're like a warm hug perfectly molded to my body. So if you're in the market for some leggings, here are some sustainable options:

Leisure

Size Range: XS - 4XL; Price: $$

Miakoda is a woman-led sustainable and eco-friendly clothing brand that exclusively uses plant-based materials to create their products. In fact, you'll never find any animal fibers such as polyester and acrylic in their garments. Their mission is to create clothing that allows you to feel both mentally and physically comfortable. Rather than using only traditional organic cotton (which is absorbent, leaving you wet and sweaty), and recycled polyester (which contributes to microplastics), Miakoda uses a blend of bamboo, organic cotton, and spandex in their high-waisted leggings. They also have a large range of sizes from XS to 4XL.

Organic Basics is a sustainable clothing brand that understands that while at the core, clothing should be made sustainably, it should also be made to last. They work with certified factory partners that share the same vision of sustainability and reducing their environmental footprint; factories that denounce child and forced labor, promote safe working conditions, living wages, and respect among all. You can learn more about each of their factories on their website. Organic Basics creates clothing using materials such as organic cotton, recycled nylon, TENCEL, recycled cashmere, and recycled wool. Their leggings are made with 96% recycled nylon, are full length, and come in three different colors.

Boody specializes in making basic essentials that are minimalist, versatile, and conscious. Their pieces are durable and timeless and made using bamboo textiles; a textile that is quickly gaining ground as it is one of the most sustainable materials to use. Boody has a wide range of legging styles ranging from traditional full length, 3/4 length, crop, and short. They even have a range of activewear leggings to choose from. Each product also shows a positive impact of the item that shows how much energy and water was saved making the item.

Size Range: XS - XL;Price: $$

LA Relaxed aspires to create clothing that allows you to make the conscious decision to take slightly less away from the plant while feeling like you're getting the most out of your day. In other words, clothing that allows you to be at peace with yourself without the worry of it harming you or the environment. All of their clothing is made in house in downtown Los Angeles, and they only work with certified mills and suppliers that ensure fair pay and ethical treatment and wages. LA Relaxed leggings are made with Tencel and come in two different styles: classic lounge and classic ribbed.

Casual

Size Range: S - 2X; Price: $$

Originally founded in New Zealand, Thunderpants is a family-owned and operated company that has since made roots in the US as well. Originally, the brand set out to create the perfect undie but they've also branched out into creating some rad leggings too! These leggings by Thunderpants are made locally in Portland, Oregon using organic cotton. They're also high-rise and versatile, meaning they can be worn as activewear, to lounge in, or under dresses!

Size Range: XS - 2X; Price: $$

Pact is a sustainable clothing brand with sustainability initiatives that don't stop at just the material type. Their clothing is made with organic cotton and they're partnered with factories that are Fair Trade Certified. With each purchase, you are given the option to offset the carbon footprint of your shipment. They also have a Give Back Box program which allows you to donate your gently used clothing and accessories to local charities. Simply reuse the box from your Pact order, fill it with your donations, and print a pre-paid shipping label from the Pact website! Leggings-wise, Pact has a wide variety to choose from including textured, fun prints, and some with pockets!

Athletic

Size Range: XXS - 6XL; Price: $$

Girlfriend Collective is one of my favorite brands to purchase clothing from not just because of their sustainability initiatives, but because of how size inclusive the brand is. It's not common to find a clothing brand that has a size range spanning 11 different sizes! As for sustainability, their leggings are made from materials like recycled polyester, recycled post-consumer water bottles, and recycled fishnets. They have a variety of styles of leggings to choose from all perfect for athletic activities or lounging. Not to mention they have a wide color range too!
